Brussels tourism tourist attractions
Brussels tourism
Brussels Belgium is a much mis-understood place and has many excellent attractions for any tourist. It has probably the best restaurants in Europe - and this with it's architecture these are the reasons to go.
The Belgian population is about 10 million and about 1/2 speak French and the other 1/2 Flemish (nearly Dutch to you and me). The Brussels population is about 1 million so easy for any tourist.
Getting about in Brussels
The Euro is adopted in Belgium but it can be an expensive place. A taxi from the airport into town will set you back about £20 where as the extremely slow rail service about £3. The Eurostar terminal, Gara du Midi is much closer to the centre.
Belgians are not renowned for their driving skills, but it is only about 90 minutes from Calais to Brussels on modern motorways. About 4 hours door to door from London.
Sight-seeing in Brussels
There are many places to see, here are a few of our favourites:
- Grand Place - Pronounced "Gron Plass" this is the old town hall in a magnificant square right in the centre of Brussels. During the summer flower markets are held and music to lights at 10pm each night in August. In the winter they have an ice rink. Drink at any bar in the square - they may seem tourist type places but all the locals go there as well. Just off the Grand Palace are many restaurants and these are all OK - don't be worried about all the tourists - all restaurants in Brussels are excellent.
- Mannekin Pis - This is a little bronze statue just off the Grand Place, taking, a ... er , Pis. They love this little guy and dress him up in clothes for national festivals. It is signposted from the Grand Place.
- Brugges - If you are driving this is a must do stop over. It's about half way between Calais and Brussels and is called the Venice of the North for all the canals. A very quaint area - visit in the summer for street horse rides and canal boat trips or the winter for the markets and mulled wine.
