CV advice from 118 student
Are you a student who needs a CV
A CV is vital for every student for any job (be it part time or the start of a career). It is a summary of your skills and experience obtained so far in your life.
Your CV is a sales document
Above all else remember that companies see loads of CVs every single day of the week. Your CV needs to stand out among all the others. Not colours or nasty stuff, but what you write within it.
What goes in a CV?
Here are the basics of a good CV (in this order)
- Your name at the top in a largish font
- Your address, telephone number and email address on 2 lines if needed
- Your career history - even if it's just McDonalds - you need to show that you have worked with people before. List your achievements, not what you had to do.
- Your qualifications - latest first.
- Your interests and hobbies (these don't include watching TV and drinking beer though)
Things you can add in your CV
Remember that your CV needs to stand out. Here are some pointers on what you can add
- Team leader of 6 staff in a busy McDonalds in the centre of the City
- Climbed to the top of Mount Everest
- Four A grade A levels in subjects xy&z
- School prefect
- Won first prize in ...
- Won scholarship to ...
Anyhow, you get the idea - you need to list your achievements
Format of your CV
OK - this is important. The format can make or break you.
- A4 white paper
- Black text
- Arial font
- No smaller font than 12 points
- No more than two pages
- No fancy logos
- Use bold for headings
