PLANNING
Decide how many and which topics you want to study and see how much free time you have before the exams.
Break the available time equally between your different modules and make a detailed plan which states what you will study each day.
Break down your work periods into 45-minute blocks. Be realistic, you can’t study 10 hours a day. Look at your available time and be sensible; i.e. in an evening do two sessions of 45 minutes. Have a ten-minute break between sessions; have a cup of tea, a quick walk or a chat on the phone.
Incorporate rest periods into your plan and reward yourself. Set aside some days or half-days where you do something that you like; for example shopping or playing sport.
HOW TO REVISE
Try using different colour pens and paper as these will act as ‘memory keys’ and help you to remember what you have written.
Use of rhymes or key words will also help you to remember lists of information.
Create flash cards for different topics, which include key points about the issue you are revising. Test yourself from these cards.
Study past exam papers and look for repeating questions.
Group revision sessions can be a good method of exchanging information and increasing your confidence.
Try to alternate between subjects and topics.
For some subjects ‘spider’ diagrams help with the processing of information, and connecting relevant facts together.
THE EXAM
Relax. Don’t try to learn new information on the exam day. Be confident in your revision.
Make sure you have all the necessary equipment; i.e. pens, pencils, lucky mascot.
When the exam starts take a moment just to breathe deeply. Resist the urge to start writing straight away.
Read through the instructions so you know exactly what you need to do.
Read through the questions and choose the necessary amount. Do a quick plan for each question determining the main points. Split the time evenly between your questions and try to stick to your time allocations. It is easier to pick up marks in the beginning of a question than at the end of another.
Start with your strongest essay question.
If you find you do not have time to finish a question complete in note form, as it will still amount to important extra marks.
AND FINALLY
Remember that the exam period is a difficult period but it will end. That hard bit of revision is worthwhile in the end.
There are people that you can turn to – remember that exams are not the be all and end all of everything, keep them in perspective.
……….and don’t forget to have a good time when you have finished.
