Welcome to London
London is such a vibrant place to be and there is so much history and things to do you'll need to ensure you have plenty of time to see everything. London is easy to get to either by flying into one of its airports (Heathrow or Gatwick are closest) or via the channel tunnel. Using London as a base you can explore other parts of the surrounding area, such as Windsor.
Getting around in London
London has the oldest metro or "tube" service in the world. It is vast and easy to use. All major attractions are a stone throw away from a tube station. You're best bet is to buy a one day travelcard that will enable you to travel the entire network on one ticket. Travel after 9.30am and it's much cheaper.
Sight-seeing in London
There are many places to see, here are a few of our favourites:
- Buckingham Palace - The Queen's home is at the end of the Mall. A nice walk from Trafalgar Square you can visit inside during the Summer months for about £8. Nearest tube: Charing Cross for Trafalgar Square; Victoria for Buckingham Palace.
- Museums - Along Exhibition Road in West London are three must see museums. The Science Museum for all thing science, the Natural History Museum for looking at the past and the Victoria and Albert Museum for looking back at British Life. All these are free of charge to enter all year round. Nearest tube is South Kensington or get off at Knightsbridge, visit Harrods and walk down (about 1/2 mile).
- London Eye - Right in the centre of London is the London Eye - the largest observation wheel there is. You can see Windsor in the West and Canary Wharf in the East. The trip takes about 30 minutes and is open all year round. A must do trip. Nearest tube is Westminster - just walk over Westminster Bridge to the other side of the river.
