Car
- Think about where you park - thieves prefer dimly-lit places with few passers-by, so choose a brightly lit car park or street
- Keep the car doors locked if driving in built up areas
- Always make sure that you have enough petrol in your tank!
- Always remove valuables from your car, don't leave your stuff in plain sight - opportunists will strike if given the chance
- Never leave your keys in your car - even for a few seconds
Taxi
- Always sit in the back, especially when on your own
- Never 'hail' a cab, always pre-book or call a reputable firm
- When booking ask for the colour and make of the car being sent
- Give your name when booking and ask the taxi driver for it
- If you feel uneasy when in the car, ask the driver to stop in a well-lit area
Bicycles
- Invest in a secure locking device for the wheel of your bike - this is the best form of protection
- Secure your bike to an immovable object
- Invest in a cover for your bike, as it reduces temptation (as well as protecting the bike)
- Have in your bike post-coded, but check with the cycle shop before using a 'punch' as some bikes may be damaged in the process!
- Consider microchip identification for high value bikes
- Fit lights so you can be seen and wear high visibility clothing
Public transport
- Try to stay away from isolated bus stops, especially after dark
- On an empty bus, sit near the driver
- On a train, sit in a compartment with lots of other people if possible, and check where the emergency chain is
Going out
- If going out, tell a friend where you are going, when you expect to be back and ring them to let them know that you are home safely
- If walking, keep to well lit areas and crowds wherever possible; NEVER take short cuts through dark alleyways
- Spread your valuables about your body - don't keep them all in your handbag ladies! Gents, spread them around your pockets
- Never accept a lift home from someone you've just met
- Don't leave your drink unattended
