Things to do in Singapore

Singapore is a vibrant city of approximately 5 million people about the size of the Isle of Wight in the UK and made up of mostly Chinese origin but a very high standard of living.

Welcome to Singapore

Singapore is a favourite stopover destination on the way to Australia, but the country has much more to offer so try and stay 2 or 3 days to explore everything.

Singapore lies close to the Equator and is hot and humid all year-round. The locals are friendly, and it is a very safe place to be during the day and at night-time. It is a great first place to go in Asia.

Getting about in Singapore

Singapore has an excellent metro system that is completely air conditioned. It gets busy during rush hour but will take you to every destination.

When you arrive at the airport, simply get a cab into town as this is the most efficient mode of transport. This trip will cost about £10 and you will see the skyline and every part on your way to your hotel - these are all air conditioned as well.

You should walk around the town - but it can get humid. Just pop in and out of air conditioned shops to cool down!

Sight-seeing in Singapore

There are many places to see, here are a few of our favourites:

  • Raffles hotel - This hotel was restored to its former glory about 15 years ago and is still a favourite. It's by Beach Road, and you should take a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar.
  • Orchard Road - The famous Orchard Road is the shopping area - rather like Oxford Street in London - but wider and cleaner. There are loads of small boutique shops as well as large department stores. Don't forget that Changi Airport also has a vast amount of duty-free.
  • Little India - The place where the Indian community resides. It's still as it was 60 years ago and you will get the best curry in Asia here.
  • "Boat Quay" and "Clarke Quay" - These lie on the Singapore River and have loads of open air bars and cafes. There are many boat races along the river during the day - watch for the events calendar.
  • Sentosa - Singapore's weekend retreat for locals. Wonderful beaches and water rides. Take the cable car over from Singapore Island then take the train around the island. An excellent day out.
