Travel budget for students

Budgeting whilst travelling as a student

Daily expenditure

work out an approximate amount-per-day that you think you may need. Include the cost of food, all transport, nighly accommodation, beer money, souvenirs and “can't miss” attractions.

Think about where you are going and all of the attractions you'll want to see - Sydney Harbour Bridge climb for example is about US$70.

Add 20% to this amount !

You'll be surprised what you'll get through - and fast. Nights out on the down - logging on the internet every day to check messages - it soon adds up. Any emergencies will be covered by your travel insurance though - don't forget to take some !

Take your student card

Most countries will have special rates for students so remember to take your student card with you. You'll get cheap train travel across Europe, cheap accomodation in some places and your bank will likely not charge commission on currency.

Check your money

There are so many scams you need to be very careful. Check the change you are given and ensure it is correct. Do not accept notes that are not in perfect condition. Check any bills at restaurants as many may add extras you have not purchased.

Do not carry valuables

There are so many stories of muggings and theft for people travelling in foreign countries. Don't take that expensive digital camera with you - use a cheap disposable one. Don't carry all your money on you or leave it in your room - use a safe.

Get money wired

Before you go find out how you might get emergency money transferred to you if everything you have is stolen and pass this information onto friends and relatives who can help you out if needed.

Have a great time!

Above all else have a great time on your travels but be careful
